Why patio shades and motors go together in Arizona
A covered patio is supposed to be the best room in an Arizona home. Then the low afternoon sun slides under the roofline and the whole space is unusable until dark. Where manual operation falls apart is size and frequency. A wide, heavy shade you want to move twice a day gets old fast on a hand crank. Most of the patio projects we do in the Tucson area end up motorized for that reason, and nobody has ever told me they regret the motor.

The real payoff is not the gadget factor. It is that the patio becomes usable during the hours you actually want to be out there. Late afternoon glare stops cutting the evening short. Morning coffee on an east facing patio stops being a squint contest. The mesh also knocks down dust and gives a covered patio a more enclosed, room-like feel without blocking the breeze.
Solar mesh fabrics come in different weaves, from open weaves that keep the view front and center to tighter weaves that prioritize shade and privacy. Darker mesh is generally easier to see through from the inside, which is a detail most people only learn when they see samples side by side.
Wind, tracks, and doing it right
An exterior shade lives outside, so the hardware matters more than it does indoors. Shades on a patio should be sized and anchored for the opening, and wider spans typically run in side tracks or cable guides that keep the fabric from swinging in the breeze. A tracked shade also seals the opening better, which improves both the shade coverage and the bug barrier. This is not a great DIY category. Anchoring into the right part of the structure and getting the shade square is what makes it work smoothly for years instead of becoming a headache.
What drives the price
Patio shade pricing follows size, fabric, tracks, and the motor. A motor adds real cost, and side tracks add more, so a large motorized tracked shade is a bigger investment than an interior window treatment.
