The dirty secret of blackout shades
Blackout fabric does exactly what it promises: no light passes through the material. What the brochure does not mention is the halo. A standard blackout shade hangs inside or over the window frame with a small gap along each side, and Tucson sun finds every millimeter of it. The result is a dark shade with bright glowing edges, which can be plenty of light to bother a sensitive sleeper.
Side tracks exist to kill that halo. If you have ever stayed in a hotel room that went truly, completely dark, tracked blackout shades are usually the reason.
How side tracks work
A side track system adds slim channels along both sides of the window frame. The edges of the blackout shade ride inside those channels as the shade moves, so there is no open gap between fabric and frame. A good system pairs the tracks with a headrail or cassette across the top that boxes in the roll, and the sill or a bottom rail closes the last edge.
- Standard blackout shade: dark fabric, bright edge glow on sunny days.
- Blackout shade with side tracks: the light path around the fabric is physically blocked on all four sides.
The difference at noon is dramatic. A well fitted tracked shade takes a bedroom from dim to genuinely dark, the kind of dark where you check your phone to know the time of day.
Who actually needs this
Side tracks are a specific tool for a specific job. They are worth every penny for some people and overkill for others.
- Night shift workers who sleep during the brightest hours of the day.
- Babies and toddlers who nap better in a dark nursery.
- Media rooms and home theaters where any glow washes out the screen.
- Anyone with light sensitive sleep, migraines, or an east facing bedroom window.
If you just want a darker bedroom and total blackness is not the mission, a standard blackout roller or a blackout cellular shade mounted snugly usually gets you most of the way there for less money.
Fit is everything
A tracked shade is only as good as its fit. The channels have to run straight and plumb, the fabric width has to match the track spacing, and the window has to be measured precisely, not eyeballed. Out of square frames, which are common in older Tucson homes, need to be accounted for during measuring. This is why tracked blackout systems are a custom, professionally installed product rather than a big box purchase.
They help with heat too
A sealed blackout shade does double duty in the desert. The same edge seal that stops light also traps a layer of still air at the glass, so a tracked blackout shade insulates noticeably better than the same fabric hanging free. On a west facing bedroom window, that means the room is darker and cooler at the same time.

Tracked systems come cordless or motorized, and motorization is a favorite for bedrooms since you can raise the shade without walking to the window. Fabric choices still matter: the room side of a blackout fabric can be a soft neutral that matches the room even though the back is a full light block.
