This question comes up at almost every consultation where there is a toddler on the floor or a dog following me around the house. Parents ask it a little nervously, like they are about to be sold something. So let me answer it plainly. Yes, cordless is safer. It is safer by a wide enough margin that the federal government now requires it on most of what I sell. Here is what that actually means, and what it says about the blinds already hanging in your home.
What Does the Federal Cord Rule Actually Require?
The Consumer Product Safety Commission put a mandatory safety standard in place for custom window coverings. It lives in the federal rules as 16 CFR Part 1260. The short version is this: custom window coverings made after May 30, 2023 have to be cordless, have cords that a child cannot reach, or have cords no longer than eight inches in any position.
Eight inches is the number to remember. The CPSC concluded that an accessible operating cord longer than that poses an unreasonable risk of strangulation to children eight years old and younger. That is the whole reasoning behind the rule.

Why Are Hanging Cords Risky for Small Children?
A looped cord at a window sits right at the height of a curious kid. It is the same height as a crib rail, a changing table, or the back of a couch pushed under a window. A child does not have to be doing anything unusual for a loop to end up around the neck, and a small child may not have the strength or the presence of mind to get back out of it.
The danger is quiet, too. There is no crash and no noise. That is the part that makes parents uneasy once they hear it, and it is why the rule targets loops and long free hanging cords specifically instead of asking families to just be careful.
Cordless changes the physics. You raise the shade by lifting the bottom rail and lower it by pulling the rail down. Nothing hangs. There is no loop to find because there is no cord in the room at all.
Do Cords Cause Problems for Pets as Well?
They do, though the failure looks different. Cats climb cords and chew bead chains. Dogs push behind a shade to watch the street and come back out with a cord wrapped around a leg or a collar. I have replaced plenty of blinds that were not worn out at all. A pet simply got tangled and took the headrail down with them.
Cordless removes the thing they get caught on. It also removes the thing they get bored and chew on, which is the reason a lot of my repeat customers give when I ask why they finally replaced a set that still worked.
Do You Have to Replace the Blinds You Already Own?
No. The rule governs what companies are allowed to make and sell. It does not reach backward into homes. Nobody is going to knock on your door about the blinds in your hallway.
That said, the older the blinds, the more worth checking they are. Plenty of homes across Tucson still have original builder blinds with a long pull cord on the right side and a separate tilt cord next to it. Those predate the current standard by many years. If a child sleeps or plays in that room, that is the window I would deal with first.
A word on cord cleats and tie-down clips. They help, and they are better than nothing. But they only work when every adult in the house wraps the cord every single time. A cordless lift works whether anyone remembers or not, and that is the difference that matters to me.
Which Cordless Options Work Best in a Tucson Home?
Cordless is not one product. It is a category, and some versions handle our light and our heat better than others. Here is how I usually steer families with young kids or busy pets.
- Cordless roller shades are the simplest choice. Clean bottom rail, nothing hanging, and the fabric options range from light filtering to room darkening for bedrooms.
- Honeycomb shades pair a cordless lift with real insulating value at the glass, which helps on the rooms that drive your cooling bills. The top down bottom up version is a favorite in nurseries because you can let light in high and keep the lower half private.
- Plantation shutters are cordless by their nature. You tilt the louvers by hand, so there is nothing to hang, chew, or tangle, and they stand up to being bumped by kids and dogs better than almost anything else.
- Motorized shades are the strongest answer for tall or hard to reach windows. Nobody is dragging a chair over to a high window, and the shade can run on a schedule so the west rooms are covered before the low-angle sun hits them.
- For very wide openings and slider walls, ask about a cordless track system rather than a traditional vertical with a chain. It covers the same span without the loop.
How Can You Check Your Own Windows in Ten Minutes?
Walk the house at a child's eye level. Get low, because a cord that looks tucked away at your height can hang right in front of a two-year-old. In every bedroom, playroom, and living space, look for three things: a loop of any size, a free hanging cord longer than your hand, and a bead chain running down the side of a shade.
Then look at where the furniture sits. A crib, a bed, a bookshelf, or a chair pushed under a window turns a cord that was out of reach into one that is not. Moving the furniture is a free fix you can do today, and it buys you time while you decide what to replace.
